Es ist mehr als 20 Jahre her, seit das Erscheinen von Maria Todorovas Buch Imagining the Balkans die Südosteuropaforschung in Aufregung versetzte. Die folgende Auseinandersetzung über ‚den Balkan‘ als Analysekategorie und/oder mental map hatte auch für die deutschsprachige Forschungslandschaft weitreichende Folgen, da in ihrem Zuge tradierte Raum- und Selbstverständnisse innerhalb des Faches infrage gestellt wurden. Während sich komparative und globale Forschungszugänge weitgehend etabliert haben, sind viele Fragen der fachlich-inhaltlichen Standortbestimmung einer genuinen Südosteuropaforschung unbeantwortet geblieben. Soziale Praktiken, Diskurse und Deutungen der Gegenwart werden unmittelbar von Versprechen geprägt. Sie durchdringen zahlreiche Bereiche des Alltags, beeinflussen zwischenmenschliche Interaktion und sind an Erwartungen, Hoffnungen und Imaginationen gebunden. Wie Versprechen wahrgenommen, rezipiert und antizipiert werden, bestimmt in nicht unerheblichem Maße Entscheidungen, die unter den Bedingungen der Gegenwart für die Zukunft getroffen werden. Auf diese Weise verbunden, schaffen sie berechenbare und gestaltbare, zeitliche Horizonte; selbst wenn sie womöglich nicht gehalten werden. The workshop aims to bring together a group of scholars to reflect and exchange their works and approaches on the topic of popular responses to nationalizing and state-building projects with a special focus on two historical regions – Bessarabia and Transnistria –, which at different times during the 20th century belonged to different polities (Russian Empire, Romania, USSR). The two regions currently constitute the Republic of Moldova. In 1991, an unrecognized Dniester Moldovan Republic has been formed in Transnistria. The residency ANABASIS inspired by Paul Celan, one of the most important German-speaking poets of the twentieth century, will feature German and Ukrainian artists working with new media. The artists are invited to deal with questions of identity and posthumanism in a funded workshop and project phase. The resulting works will be presented in November 2021. Paul Celan, whose centenary was celebrated in 2020, is a crucial figure to scrutinize those tragedies, cracks and traumas that are imprinted on the collective body of humanity in the twentieth century.
